Why house numbers are important
It’s ok your friends can find your house, so what’s the big deal about house numbers?
Unknown to many home/property owners there are often local laws and regulations about the clear and prominent display of house numbers. And if local authorities ever did a house number blitz many home owners/residents may be surprised that their property numbers are deemed to be inadequate. While rules and regulations vary from area to area, state to state and country to country, one thing doesn’t change – the need for other people and organisations (such as ambulance, police, fire services & delivery services) to find your home / property.
Most local laws stipulate that house numbers should be clear and easy to read from the street and this means making sure your house number is located at the front of your property and not obscured from view. The best place to position a house number is on your front fence or letterbox. If this is not possible, consider adding a post (to suit the aesthetics of your home/property) with the house number mounted on this.
If you are not sure about how visible your house number is, drive down your street or road during the day and also at night and ask yourself these questions;
- Can you see your house number clearly from the street / road?
- Can you see it coming from either direction that you approach your house?
- Is it obscured by vegetation or other objects?
- Is the house number looking a bit old & weathered?
If you had a negative response to any of these questions you need to think seriously about your family safety and if you are complying with local laws regarding house numbers.
Why not consider a reflective house number? They can assist with your home and your family being found night or day.
Make life easy for couriers, Australia Post, the pizza delivery man, taxis and friends or family unfamiliar with your local area to find you. Also assist the most important organisations the emergency services such as ambulance, police and fire services to find your home day or night. Remember in the case of an emergency every second counts.
House numbers are unfortunately often overlooked but they should never be undervalued. Check your house number today.
If you are unsure about local laws in your area regarding house numbering, contact your local council or shire for more information.
